Why heartworm prevention should be obtained from a veterinary hospital

Occasionally someone will ask us about ordering heartworm prevention products over the internet or by mail order to save money.  Pfizer (makers of Revolution) asserts that they do not sell directly to these companies and do not know the source of the products.  The products may be imitations with containers nearly identical to the original or may be products obtained through illegal means.  Some of these companies have been in numerous lawsuits for illegally selling these products.  Pfizer has worked with us to be able to provide your pets these products at the same cost to you per application for a 1 year supply as some of these companies.  We take heartworms seriously, having seen its effects many times, and we advocate each one of our patients receive monthly preventative.  Additionally, we want to ensure that the prevention you use is not potentially harmful or ineffective.  The following letters were written by Pfizer to help us all understand that their policy is to provide prescription products through a doctor and not through the mail.
